Pazuzu is found in Sumerian and Akkadian mythology as the king of the demons of wind, and the son of the god Hanbi. Representing the southwestern wind, he was the bearer of storms and disease. The opposing positions of his hands symbolize creation and destruction. However, as is often the case in ancient cultures, the images of evil were used to fight evil. Amulets bearing the image of Pazuzu were used to ward off the power of his enemy Lamashtu, a Lilith-like female demon that preyed on newborn babies and their mothers. This demon has been canonized by popular culture by films like The Exorcist (the whole series, including the recent Exorcist: The Beginning), the animated series Futurama (where Farnsworth creates a gargoyle by the name of Pazuzu), a Final Fantasy video game, and in the thrashing and ominous sounds of dark bands like Pazuzu, Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel, and Nefilim. This shirt is inspired by a 7th Century B.C. Assyrian bronze figurine.
