Frankenstein
In the dismal summer of 1816, Mary Godwin and Percy Shelley visited Lord Byron at the Villa Diodati in Switzerland. Inspired by a volume of ghost stories, beneath the gray and moody skies on the shore of Lake Geneva, Byron challenged his guests to compose a frightening tale. In a waking dream at the Villa, Mary imagined a pale student of unhallowed arts" and Frankenstein was born. In 1818, Mary Shelley finished writing her tale and anonymously published Frankenstein, subtitled "the Modern Prometheus." Based on the book, but with the style of classic black and white monster movies, this shirt features the enraged yellow-eyed creation of Victor Frankenstein looming in an ancient graveyard, a bolt of lightning blazing in the sky. To one side is an illustration of the electrical apparatus Frankenstein may have used to raise his monster, and the other a depiction of the icy glacier and cave where the creator catches up with his creature. Below is a quote from the novel: "the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open.""
